Silver Lake College of the Holy Family is delighted to host a public art exhibition entitled “Moments” by Wisconsin native, Laura Newman in the College Cafeteria Gallery through October 24, 2013, open to the public 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday and 8 am to 5 pm Friday and Saturday. Newman will also give an “artist talk” and casting demonstration on Wednesday, October 23rd at 11:00 am in room 102 (Art Wing inside the East entrance to the College, 2406 South Alverno Road, Manitowoc). Newman graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, with a BFA, emphasis in photography.  Not feeling challenged enough by two-dimensional arts, such as photography and painting, she began experimenting with sculpture.  After studying primarily ceramics at the Anderson Ranch and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she is currently pursuing an MFA at Illinois State University.  Moments is a collection of figurative works created in porcelain.  First using body casting techniques, Newman created intimate and abstracted sculptures of loved ones and friends.  Newman states, “Evidence of the human touch and the smooth, and creamy qualities of the porcelain complement the forms of the body that are exemplified in this work.”
