Silver Lake College’s “Sophomore Exhibitions” Spotlights Original Works of Art by 4 Students
Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, located at 2406 S. Alverno Road, will be hosting “Sophomore Exhibitions,” featuring original works of art created by Amber Kiel, Erin Kiel, Kevin Willert and Jessica Martinez. All of the students are pursuing studio art majors at Silver Lake College.
The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be on display in the Art Wing hallway from Feb. 25 to March 25. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. A reception, which is also free and open to the public, will be held March 6 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Erin Kiel, of Manitowoc, is studying studio art with an emphasis on graphic design. She hopes to have a career which is for the service of others while utilizing her own unique gifts and talents. She studies art because it allows her the opportunity to express this uniqueness. Said Erin: “It is rare that two artists can have the exact same style and technique in art. Even my identical sister and I have vastly different artistic styles, and I think that is what makes art so personal, and so special. No matter what a person creates, it is not only something ‘cool’ to look at, but it is also the individuality and the personality of the artist that is being shown through their piece of work.”
Amber Kiel, of Manitowoc, is studying studio art and graphic design with hopes of obtaining a career involving graphic design. Amber appreciates the way Silver Lake College gives her opportunities to grow and to share her creative works with others in a manner that impacts both the viewer and herself in a positive way. Said Amber: “All my life I have found a passion for art and creating something beautiful out of nothing, because that is what life should be about. I like having a freedom to express my beliefs, thoughts and feelings, because they are my own, unique, and that’s what makes it special to me.”
Kevin Willert, a Two Rivers native, graduated in 1989 from MATC with an associate degree in the commercial arts. He is furthering his education at Silver Lake College in hopes of attaining his studio art degree and then his teaching certification. Kevin has done numerous freelance painting and illustration projects. He helped with the children’s atrium mural at the Manitowoc Public Library under the direction of artist Carol Yasko. Kevin says he knew as a child that he wanted to do something in the art field.
Jessica Martínez comes to Silver Lake College from Bronx, N.Y. She chose Silver Lake College because of its unique way of incorporating the Franciscan values into education. “SLC takes a much more interpersonal approach to developing an individual as a whole person,” she said. “What could be better for a future teacher? A teacher is given an entire classroom made up of many different individuals, all of whom need to learn.” Jessica is majoring in art education with hopes of teaching art to kindergarteners or fifth- and sixth-graders. She would like to pursue an MFA in photography upon completion of her degree at Silver Lake College
