Silver Lake College Graduate Honors Those Who Supported Her by Giving Back To Community

Posted on May 08 2013

Newly minted Silver Lake College Alumna Amanda Thuss delivered the Response of the Graduates at the College’s 75th Commencement on Saturday, May 4th at the Holiday Inn Manitowoc. She had been planning a graduation party for that evening, but after hearing about a local college student who is homeless, she was inspired to turn the party into much more than a commencement celebration.

Amanda shares, “As I prepared my commencement address for the 2013 graduating class of Silver Lake College, I became both inspired and compelled to give back to the community. I had been planning a party to celebrate my accomplishments but it occurred to me that the celebration I was planning was not about me – it is about those who have helped me reach this point in my life. I am forever grateful for all those who have provided me with unwavering support and guidance over the course of seven years that I have spent as a student of higher education. I am humbled to know that I have been given opportunities that others are not as fortunate to have bestowed upon them. With that in mind, I decided the best way to thank those who have encouraged me to succeed is to give back.”

On May 4th, Amanda hosted a benefit at Revolutions Bar and Grill to raise money for Lakeshore Community Action Program (CAP), a local non-profit organization that serves as a first point of contact for those in need. Everyone attending who gave a donation was entered in a drawing to win prizes provided by 27 local business sponsors that she reached out to in the weeks before graduation. To date Amanda has collected $1500 for Lakeshore CAP, and she hopes to raise even more by boosting awareness of the organization and their continued efforts to promote economic self-sufficiency and well-being in our community. “Please help me thank those who have helped me achieve more than I could have ever comprehended, beyond my most passionate of dreams. Support this great organization.” For more information on Lakeshore CAP and to donate, visit http://lakeshorecap.org/.

Amanda graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in English, Magna Cum Laude (requires a minimum of 51 credits earned at Silver Lake College and a GPA of at least 3.7 on a 4 point scale). She completed an internship with the College Marketing Department in fall 2012 and is excited to have several articles being published in the campus magazine, New Directions, this summer.
