Silver Lake College Expands Internship Program Through Great Lakes Grant

Posted on August 29 2013

Silver Lake College of the Holy Family has been awarded a $150,000 Career Ready Internship Initiative grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation (Great Lakes) for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Today, college experiences are incomplete when they don’t include career preparation, which is why Silver Lake College is augmenting its internship program by offering 91 paid and faculty-supervised internship experiences for junior- and senior-level students. The Great Lakes grant makes it possible for the College to convert unpaid opportunities to paid internships, and includes reimbursement for travel expenses.

“One of our seniors started crying when I told her that her fall semester internship was now going to be a paid internship,” says Jan Algozine, Silver Lake's Director of Experiential Learning, Career Resources, and Internships. The student replied by telling Jan, “Thank you. Now I can enjoy and truly learn from this experience because I’ll be able to cut back on the hours at my part-time job.”

Too often students pass on a formative career experience because they need the income from a part-time job that is unrelated to their career aspirations. Algozine added, “We feel blessed to have been chosen by Great Lakes to receive this grant, and we are determined that our students will have quality internship experiences that will help them land that first job after graduation.”

“This grant allows the college to partner with local organizations to provide paid internships for our students,” says Dr. Chris Domes, President of Silver Lake College. “We are proud of our students and the level of education they receive, and we know they will bring meaningful and lasting contributions to the businesses and agencies where they are placed, making for an even stronger Manitowoc community.”

Knowing that education has the power to change lives for the better, Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates helps millions of students pay for college and repay their student loans. Through Community Investments, Great Lakes leads initiatives and funds programs that help students from traditionally underserved backgrounds start and complete a two- or four-year degree or other credential.
