Posted on April 15 2014

Silver Lake College is pleased to announce the hiring of Tara Stewart as its head women’s volleyball coach, and Mike Cavanaugh as its head men’s and women’s cross country coach.

Stewart, 36, is a full-time student at Silver Lake College, where she’s majoring in psychology and minoring in family services.

“I’m very grateful to Silver Lake College for giving me this coaching opportunity,” Stewart said. “I am a very passionate and committed coach, and I am looking forward to building a great volleyball program here at SLC based on commitment, goals, passion and community involvement.”

Stewart has coached at the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy in Appleton from 2010 to present. In addition, other volleyball coaching roles included: varsity assistant coach at Sheboygan North High School from 2010 to 2012; junior varsity assistant coach at Green Bay East High School in 2001; freshman coach at Bay Port High School in Howard in 2000; and seventh- and eighth-grade coach at Kewaunee Middle School in 1999.

The Kewaunee native played varsity high school volleyball for four years, earning second-team all-conference honors. She lives in Two Rivers with her husband, Mike, and their two children.

Cavanaugh, 36, was the assistant cross country coach at Silver Lake College for the past four years. He also coached at the high school level for five years.

Cavanaugh, who works in Manitowoc, ran cross country and track at Roncalli High School, and he remains an active runner, having completed seven marathons.

“I am excited to take over the head coach position … and I am looking forward to continuing to grow the program,” Cavanaugh said. “In the past two years, we have had a combined 10 academic All-Americans and have sent seven runners to the USCAA Cross Country National Championships. Both are numbers I am proud to tell people, and I hope in the future both numbers will continue to grow.”
