MA in Special Education

Credit Requirements

The Master of Arts in Special Education degree program requires a total of 33 graduate credits. Graduate Studies policy allows for the transfer of six (6) graduate credits from a regionally approved institution of higher education. Special Education Program policy requires that transfer of any graduate credits will only be allowed for courses which address Silver Lake College’s Special Education licensure competencies and/or degree competencies.

Courses with (*) can be taken prior to formal acceptance into the Master of Arts in Special Education. Registration for courses with (**) require official acceptance into the Master degree program.

Master of Arts in Special Education Core (12 credits)

SED 601 Transition to a Professional Career (*) OR EDU 500 Teaching 

as a Career (*)


SED 602 Research Design (**)


EDU 501 Practical Research Techniques (**)


SED 603 Special Educator as Leader (*) OR EDU 503 Leadership (*)


Thesis/Action Research (Minimum of 3 credits)

The following courses are Pass/No Credit. Student must register each semester for these courses until a grade of “Pass” is earned.

Elective Options (18 credits maximum) (*)

Degree with Licensure

To meet the 18 elective credits, candidates seeking a degree with licensure can use licensure courses taken for graduate credit if the candidate has earned the minimum grade requirement of “B.”

Degree without Licensure

Candidates may choose 18 elective credits which support a professional course of study. These courses may address the Wisconsin Teacher Standards and individual professional development plan which may include courses from a categorical licensure area even though candidate doesn’t want to complete the licensure. Elective courses for candidates without licensure must be pre-approved as part of the professional course of study.
