“Another Lent,” I thought, “another Lent. Let’s get it over with.” The day was Ash Wednesday. “Here we go again: prayer, fasting, almsgiving. There is nothing new under the sun.” The liturgy began and, after a period of silence, it was time to proclaim the Gospel from Matthew 6. When I proclaimed the phrase, “when you pray, go to your inner room…” I visibly shuddered and went on to finish the Gospel. The words that came out of my mouth were not what I had planned to say.
Alternative Spring Break Mission
We are less than three weeks from departure to Joplin, MO on a mission to assist victims of the deadly tornado which occurred on Sunday May 22, 2011. During that tragic and devastating event in Joplin, 7,000 homes were destroyed, 850 homes were damaged, and 160 people lost their lives. In all, 75% of the City of Joplin sustained damage. Recovery from a catastrophic event such as this takes years to accomplish. Some of the damage may never be corrected.
Silver Lake College of the Holy Family and Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Manitowoc are delighted to present the Father Bill Zimmer Forum, a book group for people of faith, on Tuesday, February 12, at 12:15 pm in the College Chapel. Participants are invited to come for lunch and fellowship in the College Café before the discussion. They may bring their own bagged lunch, or food is available for purchase starting at 11:30 am.

The spring 2013 sessions of Music for Tots begin the week of February 11. Classes will be offered in Manitowoc at Silver Lake College, in Green Bay at St. Philip’s Catholic School, and in Sheboygan at Ebenezer UCC Church. The next sessions in fall 2013 begin in September. Instructors at the Silver Lake College location will be Becky Haen on Tuesday mornings and Pam Quick on Wednesday evenings. Pam will also teach Monday mornings and evenings in Green Bay. Instructors at the Sheboygan location will be Donna Roblee on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings, and Sally Haines on Monday evenings. Silver Lake College Graduate Education Instructor Leads Poverty Simulation for Little Chute Elementary and High School Teachers
Barney Slowey, graduate education instructor for Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, led a poverty simulation exercise for elementary and high school teachers on Friday, January 18th at Little Chute High School, aided by several community volunteers, many of whom are former educators or administrators themselves. He came at the invitation of Mary Ann Anderson, 5th Grade Teacher for the Little Chute Area Public School District who had recently participated in an evening graduate education workshop session entitled “New Perspectives on Education: Poverty – the Great Discriminator” that addressed the effects of poverty on students’ abilities to learn. The workshop was designed by Slowey and Tamara Sharp, who are both instructor/facilitators for the community-based, accelerated graduate education program at Silver Lake College. Slowey has 17 years of teaching service and 11 years of experience in school administration, and now enjoys his role giving teachers valuable teaching tools to use in their classrooms.
Silver Lake College of the Holy Family is delighted to present Guest Artist Exhibit: Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, on display in the College Hallway Gallery (Art Wing, East entrance) and open to the public between January 11 and February 13, 2013. Exhibit hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday, and 8 am to 4:30 pm Friday and Saturday. The exhibition will include a selection from the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum permanent collection, and original handmade books created by Assistant Museum Director, Stephanie Carpenter. Jim Moran, Hamilton Museum Director, will join us for a guest talk on Tuesday, January 29 at 1:00 pm in room 102 (Art Wing, East entrance) to discuss the museum’s rich history, the art of the letter press, and the museum’s current endeavors. Silver Lake College of the Holy Family is delighted to announce that Dr. Diana Shapiro will offer group piano instruction at our Manitowoc campus beginning in January 2013. Dr. Shapiro became known internationally for her work as part of a piano duo with Dr. Stanislava Varshavski, whom she met while studying at Jerusalem Rubin Academy in Israel. Dr. Shapiro joined the Silver Lake College faculty in fall 2012 as Assistant Professor of Piano. She holds a doctorate degree in music from UW Madison, and her teaching experience includes the Wisconsin Conservatory, Maranatha College and the Jerusalem Academy of Music, in addition to private instruction. Special Education Professor Recognized by the Wisconsin Association for the Education of the Blind and Visually Impaired
On October 19, 2012 Sister Mary Karen Oudeans, OSF, PhD, Professor of Special Education at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, was presented the Special Recognition Award by the Wisconsin Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Sr. Mary Karen has worked tirelessly to promote and improve education for visually impaired students, their future educators, and other professionals in the field of Blindness and Low Vision. In 2000, Silver Lake College became and continues to be, the only institution in Wisconsin where educators can become certified as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired. “We are consistently receiving great evaluations. Our instructors come from the field, bringing their experience and expertise directly from the classroom to the student which is essential to the future of special education,” states Sr. Mary Karen.
Silver Lake College to Host "Christmas At Silver Lake" Concerts December 1, 7:30 PM and December 2, 5:00 PM
The Silver Lake College of the Holy Family Department of Fine Arts is proud to present the 5th annual "Christmas at Silver Lake" concerts on Saturday December 1st at 7:30 pm, and Sunday December 2nd at 5:00 pm in the Silver Lake College Chapel, located at 2406 South Alverno Road in Manitowoc. The Alumni Association will be providing holiday refreshments for all guests in the College Café one hour prior to the start of each performance. The events are free and open to the public. A good will offering will be accepted. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early for refreshments and best seating.
